vision/voice/philosophy

I spent years as an actor before I came to writing and directing. I simply got tired of going along with the ideas of the cis-men in charge, who for the most part, had the fully-formed idea in their head and rarely asked for input from others on the creative team. So I formed my creative process by deciding what I did, and didn't agree with. I became an actor-centered director.

My focus as an artist lies deeply within group devising and collaboration. My greatest strength as a director comes from the duel abilities of choosing the right people for the project, and creating an inclusive, fun, invigorating space for their ideas and experiences to come out. I am not interested in auteurship or having all the answers (in fact, often when I begin a project, I don't yet know how it's going to end), but I am endlessly fascinated by people and what they can bring to the table when you give them the right provocations. I use games, silliness, poems, dance, and lots of lots of talking as part of my process, whether it be for film or theatre.

The themes I come back to in my work are matters of queer desire, intimacy, connection, love, friendship, fucking it up, being a failure, being okay, and to challenge the bullshit norms of the colonial hetero-patriarchy through and with our bodies. I love dance and all creative movement. I want to bring to light and celebrate the voices of marginalized people, specifically putting women, queer people and people of colour at the helm of telling their own stories. I aim to be playful, stay open, and learn with my body.
